I remember the feeling on the morning of A-level results day. A sense of relief but also nervous about my future. What am I supposed to do now? Am I meant to be going to university? Should I go travelling?
I never really had a plan, I just always knew university was never really an option for me. There was just too much to choose from, like when you go to a restaurant and the menu is 6 pages too long. What if my dinner came and I’d ordered the wrong thing? I can’t really return a £50k student loan back to the kitchen.
I always felt teachers favoured those with their chosen university and high UCAS score rather than encouraging others to the alternative options that suit them better. At the end of the day, schools and colleges compete for a high acceptance rate and I really felt that.
If, like I did, you feel like you don’t know what to do, remember university isn’t the only route. There are lots of brilliant companies out there with training schemes looking for school/college leavers, us included!
